In my estimation, for every lackluster sequel that's made, that's a team that could have been working on a new IP that would be far more fresh and original and have the potential to be the "next big thing." But we as fans are addicted to sequels. Sure, many of us love Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, but how many should he make until we start hating them? 4, 6, a dozen? Sometimes we just have to let things go. Just because a series is good, that doesn't mean it needs to keep producing titles until it collapses from exhaustion. Why should we expect the fourth game would start moving in the right direction? We already saw changes for the worse with Dead Space 3 over its predecessors. So why then, do we truly need a Dead Space 4? I would argue that we don't, and sometimes it's better to let a series exist with only one or a few installments rather than run it into the ground. And Call of Duty is its own category entirely, with too many reinventions to count. Examples of this can be up for debate, but I'd say the leap from Halo 3 to Halo Reach set that series back, and the same with Assasin's Creed 3 over Assassin's Creed 2. That's why I can safely declare that games like Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Effect 2 and even Dead Space 2 were dramatically better than their predecessors.īut at a certain point, the "improvements" start to make the game worse much of the time. ![]() Sequels often take the great promise of their original games and improve upon them in ways that don't feel forced.
